Leadership: Competence Required in Changing Business Landscape |

About the author
Dr Ashish Pandey leads the Research & Development
function at Pragati Leadership Institute. He is passionate about developing
management models and theories which can integrate contemporary management
thinking and traditional wisdom of Indian culture. |
What and Why of Lateral Leadership: Many times
in organizations, we are asked to lead a change initiative or an important
project, success of which depends on the cooperation of several people
across the organization over whom we have no formal authority. These kinds
of challenges are more often these days because of flatter management
structures, outsourcing, virtual teams and many upcoming unconventional
organizational designs. In these work settings command and control style
of management doesn’t work. Competence required to be successful in such
projects is termed as Lateral Leadership. Lateral leadership is
critical for championing project completion, gaining access to the resources
we need to carry out the effort, to gain acceptance of key players whose
cooperation we need and initiating and implementing valuable changes for
our organization.
Skills required for lateral leadership: Jay Conger,
the authority in the field of leadership, maintains that to be successful
in lateral leadership role, an executive needs to develop and posses some
special competencies like networking, persuading and negotiation etc.
along with other managerial competencies like planning, organizing etc.
Skills particularly relevant for lateral leadership are explained below:
- Networking: Networking is all about cultivating
relationships consciously. Network of relationship needs to be cultivated
inside and outside our department and even organization. Number of relations,
influence, and wide range of expertise are some of the indicators of
strength of our network. Many people posses the innate quality of building
relationships. They are the best to network with for that can automatically
make us part of a large network

It’s a great pleasure sharing with you that three of our trainers,
Ms. Kuku Singh, Ms. Anu Wakhlu and Mr. Vijay Munshi have
completed the Stage I assessment of Results Coaching which is a major
step towards getting International Coach Federation (ICF) accreditation
as a Coach. ICF is a leading global organization dedicated to advancing
the coaching profession by setting high standards, providing independent
certification, and building a worldwide network of credentialed coaches.
Ms. Anu Wakhlu delivered a talk for the NHRD Network,
Pune Chapter on Executive Coaching. The talk focused on the evolution
of Executive Coaching (how it emerged and how it has shaped to its current
form) and members gained immense knowledge on the different aspects
of coaching required in business like life coaching, career coaching,
, etc. The talk also threw some light on how Executive coaching works
best for enhancing potential and for high performing executives.
Ms. Kuku Singh was invited by HR InfoTech to deliver
a talk on Wholesome Leadership to 175 IT professionals. The focus of
the talk was deepening the understanding of “wholesomeness” and its
connectedness to Inspirational Leadership.

Leadership |
What’s COOL?
|
- Constructive persuasion and negotiation: First
it should be understood that persuasion and negotiations are not the
tools for manipulation. Persuasion and negotiation need to be instrumental
in reaching a win-win solution. Developing a Win -Win attitude is not
easy but not impossible either. Stephen Covey, internationally respected
leadership authority, explains that a win-win approach is not about
what we decide, but how we decide an issue. The most surprising benefit
of thinking Win – Win is the pleasant feelings it brings on for both/all
parties involved.
- Consultation: Managers should not rush to define action steps
for any project or change initiatives. Instead they should take time
to visit people whose buy-in they need. Consultation does the ground
work to carry out initiatives and smoothen the resistance.
- Coalition building: People support a project or an initiative
which they think has come from them and is not a one man’s agenda. An
executive, to exercise lateral leadership, must identify people who
possess critical resources for the project and enlist them to make a
single body of authority.
Why people don’t focus on lateral leadership:
Many executives don’t focus on building lateral leadership because of
two reasons; one, they are too closely focused on their functions and
two, managers experience intense pressure to grapple with what they see
as day to day responsibilities and hence give little time to building
relationships. However, building lateral leadership capability is like
creating capital in the long run.
Some action points: The question now is how to
reconcile short term requirements and build a capital of long term lateral
leadership. Jay Conger recommends dedicating a specific amount of time
each day or week to sharpen our lateral leadership skills. For example,
commit to having lunch each Thursday with a different person inside or
outside your organization whom we don’t know well but who may play an
important role in a project we’ll be leading. Jay Conger also recommends
getting to know peoples’ opinions on projects or initiatives before calling
for a formal meeting for better buy in.

Take
the risk
Mark Twain once said, "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed
by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw
off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds
in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

Several weeks after a young man had been hired;
he was called into the personnel director's office. 'What is the meaning
of this?' the director asked. 'When you applied for this job, you told us
you had five years experience. Now we discovered this is the first job you've
ever held.' 'Well,' the young man replied, 'in your advertisement you said
you wanted somebody with imagination!' |
